Come discover how astonishing
it is to unravel
your own blossoming.
― Tara Estacaan
Like dawn, I rise
From the dark, a half-remembered dream
Of cold and silence, whispers of elder fear
Soft light draws me outside
Across the threshold of myself
A breaking-through, unlocking
In this reawakening
I will sing with the orioles
I will dance with the breeze
Letting this weathered heart
Bloom like camellias once again.
The Changing of the Seasons
The Spring Equinox, also known as the vernal equinox, is a celestial event that occurs each year around March 20th in the Northern Hemisphere (September in the Southern Hemisphere). It marks the official beginning of Spring, the season of renewal, growth, and vitality.
During the Spring Equinox, day and night are approximately equal in length, symbolizing a perfect balance between light and darkness. This equilibrium is a reminder of the delicate harmony that exists within nature and within ourselves. As the Earth tilts on its axis, the sun crosses the celestial equator, bringing increasing daylight hours and warming temperatures.
Cultures around the world have celebrated the Spring Equinox for millennia, often with rituals and festivities that honor the changing of seasons and the promise of new life. In pagan traditions, Ostara is celebrated as the time when the goddess of spring brings forth fertility and abundance. Symbols of fertility such as eggs, rabbits, and flowers are commonly associated with this time of year. In many Christian traditions, it coincides with Easter, a holiday symbolizing rebirth and resurrection.
From a scientific perspective, the Spring Equinox is a key event in Earth's annual journey around the sun. It signals the end of winter and the beginning of a new cycle of growth and regeneration. Plants begin to bloom, animals emerge from hibernation, and the natural world bursts forth with vitality. This year, it is an especially auspicious event — the earliest it has occurred in 128 years!
The Season of Rebirth and Renewal
Coinciding with the Spring Equinox, Ostara marks a pivotal moment in the dance of nature, where light and darkness achieve perfect balance before stepping into the radiant embrace of Spring. Rooted in the fertile soil of pagan tradition, this ancient celebration speaks to the eternal cycle of renewal and growth that pervades our existence.
Ostara is often attributed to Ēostre, the Germanic goddess of Spring, who embodies the essence of rebirth and regeneration. Just as the sun ascends higher in the sky, casting its golden rays upon the land, so too do we arise from the darkness of winter, embracing the light that illuminates our path forward.
As the earth awakens from its wintry slumber, Ostara emerges as a symbol of hope and vitality. It is the time when the land stirs with the promise of new beginnings, as buds unfurl and life in its various forms pulses with renewed vigor. The air is imbued with the sweet scent of blossoms, and the chorus of birdsong heralds the return of warmth and abundance.
This celebration invites us to embrace the inherent beauty and magic of the natural world, to marvel at the wonders of creation unfolding before our eyes. It reminds us to pause and reflect on the blessings that surround us, from the bountiful harvests of the Earth to the love and companionship of family and friends.
In the midst of our busy lives, Ostara beckons us to reconnect with the rhythms of the earth, to tread lightly upon the land and honor its sanctity. It is a time for ritual and celebration, for gathering together in community and giving thanks for the blessings we have received.
In the spirit of Ostara, we honor the cycles of nature and the interconnectedness of all living beings. We recognize the delicate balance that sustains life on this planet and renew our vow to nurture and protect it for generations to come. Like the seeds we sow in the fertile earth, our actions have the power to shape the world around us, either nurturing growth and abundance or sowing discord and destruction.
As we welcome the return of the light, let us also rekindle the flame of hope within our hearts. Let us sow seeds of kindness and compassion, knowing that even the smallest act of love has the power to transform the world. And as we dance beneath the flourishing branches of the springtime trees, let us rejoice in the beauty of life and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
Ostara is more than just a celebration — it is a state of being, an embodiment of the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth that we all hold within us. May we embrace its lessons with open hearts and curious minds, and may the spirit of Ostara guide us on our journey towards wholeness and renewal.
