I live in a tropical country where winter feels like a footnote to the Christmas season. We feel its effects only when the snow begins to melt in the north and the winds carry hints of cold, announcing the coming of spring. However distant it may seem, winter has not escaped us entirely. We learn about it in school, and through medical literature I came to understand the seasonal moods and illnesses the season brings.
My eldest’s favorite season is winter. This was finally cemented when she experienced it for the first time last year and declared that she prefers snow over our unending summer. Hence, I often contemplate what winter means for me— and for her! How it touches us personally and what deeper meaning it may offer.
The winter season marks the dominance of darkness, which traditionally begins at Samhain (November 1). For most people, winter is a hard and dangerous season. Those who failed to plan would not only struggle, but perish. Illness and death increased. Cold weakened bodies; hunger lowered resistance. Winter was a test of preparation and restraint. It revealed the truth of one’s relationship with land, labor, and community.
Spiritually, winter is a sacred stillness. It is a season of waiting, listening, and endurance—a time when life withdraws to remember itself, aligning with nature’s rhythm.
Therein lies the inspiration for Winter Tales. A personal love letter to this season of profound quiescence. A reminder that just as there is a season for action, there is also a time for stillness.
Resilience in Silence
A rich, dark green with cyan shimmer. The evergreen in a field of snow. A symbol of survival and quiet strength.
Cold Beauty
A deep, matte gray with lavender shimmer. The color of bare branches and long nights. Stoic and timeless.
Melancholy Warmth
A muted magenta with rose shimmer. Introspective and mysterious, like the flush of memory in a cold season.
May this time rejuvenate our zest for life. Albert Camus said it best during a moment of deep introspection and pause: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”
