I've heard of this thing called "Target Fixation" in motorsports. They say that under stress, our field of vision narrows, and we fixate on a obstacle — maybe a pothole, curb, or taillights. When this happens, our bodies unconsciously move toward it.

Same goes with pilots. They learn "The Law of the Look", where they must look toward the horizon and visualize the altitude they want to achieve, averting their gazes from the spinning ground below.

In the many crises of our modern era, do we apply this concept?

I look around at the world we have now, where there is war, famine, and disease, brought about by the greed of a lucky few. I look toward the past through the records of our ancestors, preserved in the pages of old books, and I only see more of the same. I look toward the future through the time-windows our artists and writers have created for us, and yet again I see evidence of near-identical despair.

Are we, as a species, really looking toward where we want to go?
