About the Creative

My name is Mikayla, I am the maker behind White Bear Pens.

My passion for pens and stationery started early, but I didn’t get my first fountain pen until 2022 when I happened upon a planner with Tomoe River paper. When I looked up what that meant and saw the phrase “fountain pen friendly,” the next logical step was that I needed a fountain pen. I quickly discovered the quiet magic of fountain pens; the colors, the feel, the inks, the small moment of calm they offer. Eventually this passion expanded in a creative way to include making the most whimsical pens I could with sparkle, transparency, fun color combinations, and unique design elements. I try to bring joy with every pen I make, and I hope the spark of calm I encounter using fountain pens is shared with anybody who uses pens I made as well.

I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota with my husband, daughter, two dogs, and cat. When not making or using pens, I enjoy drawing, learning to play the piano, knitting, reading, walking, and watching Friends and The Office reruns.

Interview with @whitebearpens

How did you fall down the rabbit hole of fountain pens and stationery? AKA, the moment that made you fall in love with writing tools and supplies?

I happened upon a Tomoe River planner, read the words “fountain pen friendly,” got a Preppy to try, and the rest is history!

What do you do for work? Is there any way this hobby is intermingled with your work?

My hobby became my work, I make fountain pens.

What else are you in to that you would like to share with people to better know you?

I am learning to play piano (absolute beginner), and I love to draw, knit, and read.

What words/quote would you like to share to other aspiring creatives?

I have refused to live
locked in the orderly house of
reasons and proofs.
The world I live in and believe in
is wider than that. And anyway,
what’s wrong with Maybe?

You wouldn’t believe what once or
twice I have seen. I’ll just
tell you this:
only if there are angels in your head will you
ever, possibly, see one.

- Mary Oliver

What do you believe is the best starter fountain pen? Where should people start?

Preppy since it’s reliable and refillable.

What's your go-to pen and ink combo?

Sailor Pro Gear Slim with Sailor Manyo Kakitsubata.
