How did you fall down the rabbit hole of fountain pens and stationery? AKA, the moment that made you fall in love with writing tools and supplies.
I fell into the rabbit hole in a really roundabout way. I was in art school for comics and cartooning and wanted an inkwell to put my India ink in. After searching online I found some websites selling empty fountain pen ink bottles. While picking one out, I saw some pens that claimed to have flexible nibs, and grabbed one of those to mess with. I didn't really like that initial pen much, but it was just enough to make me want to try another... And then another, and another. And now we're here.
What do you do for work? Is there any way this hobby is intermingled with your work?
I have arthritis and can't work reliably any more, but when my health allows, I definitely still draw and write as much as possible, even if I'm not actively working on getting any cartoons published. Even when my hands don't cooperate I try to write and doodle a little because it keeps me sane.
What else are you in to that you would like to share with people to better know you?
I think 95% of my interests are nerdy things or cute things, like Pokemon, or Zelda, or collecting Squishmallows... But for my entire life, I've been a massive hockey fan (go Devils!) and I will absolutely talk hockey with anyone who wants to. And probably anyone who just seems like they might want to.
What words/quote would you like to share to other aspiring creatives?
Don't wait for opportunities to come to you. Be proactive!
What do you believe is the best starter fountain pen? Where should people start?
The Monteverde Monza. It comes with multiple nibs and converters! Pretty much perfect for testing out what you like.
What's your go-to pen and ink combo?
My Pilot Stargazer with Cross Violet... Both of which are discontinued products. Sorry! My currently available go-to combo is a Pelikan m405 with Pennonia Turkish Blue.
What's your favorite color? :)
The pretty magenta of prickly pears. Or purple, as a whole color family.
