There once was a Buffalo named Nyati. His best friend was a green and beige striped snake named Mianzi. It was an odd and unusual friendship that the other animals at the watering hole often joked about. Yet they were inseparable.
One day, Nyati felt ill from the scorching heat of the sun.
"I feel I might faint!" He complained to Mianzi.
But the watering hole had dried up, and they were hearing of morbid tales of friends perishing from the awful heatwave.
"Oh, when will this end?" Mianzi cried out to the heavens. Being a snake, he bore the heat easily by burrowing underground. But he was terrified of losing his friend.
Suddenly, Mianzi remembered the old Master of Spirits, an elephant who lived in an isolated graveyard who might know some way to rid them of their plight. He slithered on his belly and begged the Master of Spirits to save his friend.
"I will agree to your request. And your friend Nyati will live. But you will never be able to play together with the way you used to." The Master explained.
It was a big price to pay, but Mianzi agreed.
The next morning, Nyati could not find his snake friend anywhere. But he was surprised to find himself in a cool area, surrounded by tall bamboo—striped green and beige.
