How to Store Ballpoint Pens | EndlessPens

As pen enthusiasts, we know how important proper storage is in maintaining the quality of our writing instruments. Storing your ballpoint pens correctly can enhance their performance, extend their lifespan, and keep them in tip-top shape. While there is no perfect storage solution, this guide will cover some of the best ways to store your ballpoint pens. Here are some general guidelines you can follow when storing your ballpoint pens.

Cap your pen

One of the simplest things you can do to store your ballpoint pens properly is to ensure that it is capped or retracted when not in use. This will prevent leaks and keep your pen from drying out. Keep your pen in a cool and dark place, away from direct sunlight.

Position the pen nib-side down

One of the most important things you can do when storing your ballpoint pens is to point the tip downward. Doing so will ensure the ink remains intact and in contact with the steel ball at the pen's tip. It will also prevent ink from draining through the opening at the back of the ink cartridge, which can create a total mess.

Use an airtight bag

Evaporation is one of the reasons why ballpoint pens lose their ability to write because of exposure to air. You can prevent this by storing it in a container such as an airtight bag. Take a Ziploc bag, lay your ballpoint pen flat inside, and push all the air out. Reseal the bag and keep your ballpoint pen in a cool and dry place.

Store pens in the refrigerator

If you want the ink in your ballpoint pens to stay “fresh” or flow better for longer, then storing it in a cool environment will slow down the evaporation of solvents in the ink. Place your pen in a water-resistant container and place it in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to write, warm the tip of your pen by running it under warm water or using a small flame so that the ink liquefies.

Dip in wax before storing

Say you’re taking an extended vacation and won’t be around to use your ballpoint pens for a long time. You may be concerned about them drying out. Storing them in the other ways we have mentioned will help, but what will really secure your pen is sealing the tip with wax. Simply take a candle and dip your pen in the wax until it coats the tip. This is an effective way to seal the tip and allow you to write with it even after a prolonged period of absence.
