Who is @starshinepen?
We’re absolutely delighted to welcome @starshinepen to the HATCH community as one of our newest creative partners! She’s the one behind the design concept for the HATCH – BENU Blue Apatite Talisman, a fountain pen that beautifully captures the enchanting hues of nature.
Picture sky blue tones melting seamlessly into cool sea-green shades inspired by the blue apatite stone. Add a touch of silver shimmer and glitter flakes cascading across the cap and body, and you see a fountain pen that radiates clarity and positivity— just like the essence of stone itself.
What makes this project a delight is the story behind @starshinepen's HATCH journey. @starshinepen initially had a different pitch for HATCH and BENU, and together, we explored her first concept and tested the design. However, ultimately, due to different considerations and circumstances, it did not pan out. While many would stop at that point, @starshinepen was not deterred and she came back with something magical; a new pitch, paired with a vibrant colored sketch.
The new inspiration and vibe caught our eyes so, together with our creative team and BENU, we collaborated to bring the concept to life. Now, the Blue Apatite fountain pen is here and we’re happy we can finally share this with everyone; a joyful celebration of imagination, perseverance, and ambition.

Question 1: BENU pens have such an incredible, unique personality! I'd love to know: what was the very first BENU pen to catch your eye? And what is it about the brand that makes it your absolute favorite?
@starshinepen: The first Benu to ever catch my eye was the Benu Euphoria Jazz. Something about the lovely navy and the chunks of gorgeous shimmer!
Benu's designs are absolutely exquisite. Each pen has a story and a history to it. The designs are bold, maximalist, fearlessly original. I admire that boldness and that creativity. (I think I own over 15 Benu pens at this point!)
Question 2: The use of the colors of the Blue Apatite is absolutely stunning in this pen! Could you share the story behind what inspired you to build your design concept around this gorgeous stone?
@starshinepen: My inspiration came from a blue apatite stone I was given as a gift. I read about how they encourage self expression and help foster creativity, so I put it on my writing desk. One evening, while I was writing with one of my Benu Talisman models, I happened to look up and notice the stone.
That's when the idea came to me: "Hey! What if there was a Benu Talisman Blue Apatite pen? What would that be like?” It all just seemed to come together very magically.
Question 3. Seeing how the Blue Apatite, your second pitch for HATCH, finally came to life. How do you feel?
@starshinepen: I am really excited and overjoyed! Seeing this idea become a reality is so incredible and amazing!
Question 4: Many globally celebrated creatives have a unique personal mantra, daily practice, or ritual that anchors their work, like Maya Angelou renting a quiet hotel room to write, or Haruki Murakami sticking to a strict routine. Do you have a personal mantra, tradition, or practice that you always turn to when bringing a new project to life?
@starshinepen: I have a photograph of outer space and the stars. I always look at it and keep it by my desk. I use it as a reminder: Creativity is like the stars and the universe. It's waiting to be discovered and shared with the world.
Question 5: Who are your biggest influences that contributed to your personal writing style? Are there any pieces from them you are particularly fond of? We would love to check out any you recommend.
@starshinepen: I love Tove Jansson's Moomin stories. Her books are so whimsical and fun. Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist is my absolute favorite, though. That book really changed the way I saw imagination and creativity. It helped me realize the importance of holding onto it and not giving up on my dreams.

Question 6: When you aren't writing or exploring stationery, what else do you love to do? How do you feel your other creative outlets or hobbies influence your writing and artistic style?
@starshinepen: I love to stargaze, collect crystals and go for nature walks. All these are so different, and yet somehow very similar. Stargazing helps me remember to keep the spark of wonder alive, the crystals encourage me to embrace change and all that life has to offer, and the walks among the trees and flowers help remind me to be a part of it all. All these are so important for the creative process of a writer.
Question 7: How did you first find out about HATCH? As a fellow creative partner, which released HATCH project caught your eye?
@starshinepen: I first heard about HATCH from Karyna, at KarynaLovesToPlan. I love watching her fountain pen and stationery videos. I heard about her gorgeous fountain pen collaborations with HATCH and I was absolutely fascinated!
The HATCH project that really caught my eye was Jane Euphoria's Bratty Rizz. That pen had me spellbound: it's a Benu Euphoria AND it's neon green and sparkly? I just knew I had to have it.
Question 8: How was your experience working with HATCH? Is there any specific detail you’re glad you were able to represent in your design?
@starshinepen: Working with HATCH was such an amazing and wonderful experience! They were so helpful and kind, and so generous. They really helped me through all the processes and steps and made it an absolute dream come true. I am really excited we were able to capture the magic and celestial wonder of the blue apatite stone together! :D
