October always brings the excitement of All Souls and Saints Day in our province. It is a time when we visit our dearly beloved, clean their tombstones, and bring food for them (almost like a mini fiesta). Remembering our departed is a serious matter where I grew up. It means we continue to value them in our hearts and this helps their souls to move on.
But what about those who were forgotten? A Santelmo is an apparition of the lost spirits of who died violently on stormy nights, or near the sea. These apparitions appear as a fireball, floating deep within the mangroves, looking for those who wronged them. When you see a Santelmo, it can mean death to the wicked or a blessing to the pure of heart.
Our Santelmo-inspired pen is a family affair remembering the forgotten. My eldest, Vidya, who is fascinated by the supernatural and stories of the peculiar, helped me put together this concept. Kahlil, my husband, helped to design the nib engraving inspired by our Pilipino tribal art. The Santelmo pen is our family’s way of celebrating those lost souls this coming All Souls Day. May you find peace wherever you are.
