Description
Kabazaiku (樺細工) translates literally as "birch craftsmanship", but that is unusually misleading since it is, and has always been, the fashioning of boxes, storage containers and smoking accoutrements - and now fountain pens - out of cherry bark. The skill involved in producing Kabazaiku items lies in the removal of the bark and its cleaning and polishing, the shaping of the cherry heartwood, then the final re-application of the bark to the wood, using the tree's own sap as an adhesive. Many of the Kabazaiku containers made in Japan are for the storage of commodities like tea and tobacco, as the cherry bark helps to maintain a constant humidity.
The Sailor Kabazaiku Cherry Bark fountain pen differs from the other pens in the 'Precious Wood' family in that it has a screw-fitted cap, and protection or the barrel should you wish to post the cap. However, as with its cousins, the Sailor Precious Wood Kabazaiku Cherry Bark fountain pen is finished with restrained gold-plated accompaniments that serve to highlight the wood's texture and pattern.
