Description
The theme of this edition of Manyo Ink is food. The food that people ate during the Heian period is described in the Manyoshu. Discover what kind of food culture existed among the common people or the aristocracy.
- Aka-Mai - was the first rice introduced to Japan, also known as 'KODAI-MAI' (ancient rice).
- Takenoko - Bamboo shoots can be eaten, and when they grow large enough to become bamboo, the trunk can be cut and used as a vessel.
- Kaki - They either waited for them to ripen or dried them to enjoy the sweet persimmons.
- Uri - In the Heian period, melon-like cucumber was available and was eaten when fully ripe.
- Nobiru - Garlic aroma with a leek-like taste. Believed to have vital and rejuvenating powers.
