What Are Fountain Pens Used For?

Fountain pens are beautiful instruments that provide a luxurious writing experience. However, in today’s world where convenience, speed, and ease are of the utmost importance, it may not always make sense to go analog. This may leave some people wondering what fountain pens are actually used for. But these writing tools are much more versatile than we realize. Here are some of the best uses for fountain pens that any pen enthusiast will love:

Daily note-taking

Fountain pens are suitable for simple writing tasks such as note-taking. With a decent fountain pen and ink combination, you won’t have to worry about hard starts or skipping as you pick up and put down your pen. Writing your notes will also require very little effort.

Letter writing

There’s nothing quite like receiving a beautiful handwritten note or letter from someone you care about. Fountain pens are excellent choices for letter writing because of the way they are designed. You can write for long periods with very little pressure, and some pens have a very large ink capacity to allow you to write for even longer.

Journaling

Similar to letter writing, journaling can take up quite some time. If you’re a fan of writing in your daily journal, then the smooth and easy experience of writing with a fountain pen may be better than ballpoint or rollerball options. It can prevent your hand from cramping and even improve your handwriting with regular use.

Signing documents

Signing documents is easy with a fountain pen. The key here is to look for an ink that is well-behaved enough for normal copy paper, which is what is often used for documents. Try something like the Sailor Pigmented Ink, which performs well on standard copy paper. It also helps to use a finer nib when signing documents to prevent feathering and bleed-through.

Calligraphy

Many people get into the fountain pen hobby through calligraphy. The variety of fountain pen nibs available allows you to dabble in this hobby, whether you opt for a 0.5mm stub nib or another alternative. This is perfect for cards and other writing designs.

Sketching or drawing

One less common use for fountain pens is sketching or drawing. People typically use fountain pens for writing, but they are also excellent tools for drawing and sketching. Using a finer nib with a drier ink can help create pencil-like strokes, but if you want some line variation and smudging in your drawings, you can also opt for flexible nibs and a wetter ink.

Essay writing

Essay writing is another activity that requires a longer use of a pen. The ease of using a fountain pen will prevent your hand from cramping as you write your essay. If you aren’t using fountain pen-friendly paper, then follow the same guidelines as signing documents on copy paper when choosing your nib and ink.

Fountain pens are not just for special occasions. They are good everyday writers that are quite versatile. From calligraphy to journaling, you’re sure to find more than one use for your fountain pens.
