The 12 Chinese zodiac signs refer to the 12 unique animals that corresponds with the 12 Earthly Branches in conjunction with one’s birth year. The animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. In Chinese tradition, the start of each lunar new year means a new animal becomes the zodiac sign for the year, with each animal replacing one another in a twelve-year cycle.

Negoro-nuri style lacquerware, which originates from Japan’s Wakayama prefecture, refers to a coat of red lacquer applied over an undercoat of black lacquer. It is a traditional Japanese lacquering method.
